Slam Biography

Since the release of their album Human Response in summer 2007, in between constant touring, SLAM have remixed DK7, Unkle, Radioslave, Sasha, Prompt, Subban and Fergie to critical acclaim. Their most recent releases on Soma include the singles from Human Response, with remixes from Radioslave, Adam Beyer and Samuel L. Sessions & forth-coming remixes of Azure by The Black Dog & Ghost Song by Joris Voorn.

In December 2008, SLAM also put together the “10 years of Pressure” CD for Mixmag to celebrate the 10th birthday of their Pressure club in Glasgow and they did an Essential Mix for Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. Earlier in the year the SOMA label bosses also released volume 5 in the Mix CD series Sci-Fi Hi-Fi, following on from Luciano, Ewan Pearson, Alex Smoke and Funk D Void. SLAM delivered a heady blend of forward-thinking, mind-bending organic, groovy techno. A real journey starting with their trademark deep, spacey sonic tones and building in intensity throughout the mix, taking in influences from minimal to Latin beats and even some disco. The mix included tracks from some of the new Soma artists, as well as 2 exclusive Slam tracks from their new 12 inch label, Paragraph.
Paragraph Recordings was launched by SLAM in December 08 as an outlet for their darker, stripped back techno. Orde and Stuart felt it was a good time to have a label to focus on their own output so they can define the sound completely. After the success of City Destroyer, SLAM follow-up with what has been described as their biggest dance-floor track since Positive Education. Hot Knives was originally composed for SLAM’s live shows while touring clubs and festivals last summer, but after a realising the potential of the track, it was quickly adapted for release. Paragraph 2 also features What’s On Your Mind, which featured on SLAM’s Sci-Fi Hi-Fi CD.
SLAM’s classic, Positive Education also makes an appearance in 2009 with remixes coming in from man-of-the-moment, Paul Ritch along with D’Julz, Tim Green & Fergie. The reactions and requests for the tracks have already been pouring into the Soma office… without the tracks even being promo’d. Due out in May09 - these re-works will be massive!
SLAM have played all around the world, championing UK underground electronic music, whilst always living and working in their home base of Glasgow, where they have helped to develop and influence one of the best music and party cities anywhere. Ask any of the bands and DJs who have performed at their monthly Pressure parties. People like Vitalic, Laurent Garnier, Ricardo Villalobos, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet and Andrew Weatherall, all cite the city and the club as being amongst their favorite in the world. When you add that SLAM are currently preparing their 12th production of their annual, SLAM Tent (15000 capacity) at the T in The Park festival in Scotland, (which sold out in an hour again this year), then you start to get a feel for the passion for their scene and their music that Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan have. The label they created in 1991, Soma Records is another example of their dedication to the cause. At a time where it’s daunting to be an independent label, Soma are incessant in their march forward, confirming their position in dance music history.
