OWNERSHIP STATEMENT

A NOTE FROM THE AWAKENINGS TEAM

We want to take a moment to speak with you directly. Not only as a brand, but as the people behind Awakenings. The team that’s been building this together with you for years.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been trying to and still are figuring out how to move beyond just words. How to act in a way that’s honest, informed, and responsible. You’ve asked questions, shared concerns, and challenged us to reflect. We value this and we hear you.

We’ve struggled with putting out this statement. Because to be completely transparent, it has felt inadequate. What’s happening in the world calls for action, not just words. Something real, something tangible.

Awakenings was founded by Monumental Productions in 1997. Awakenings became part of Superstruct in 2021, following earlier ownership changes over the years.

Through all of that, our team has stayed the same. The faces behind the scenes, the values we hold, the way we build our events together. None of that has changed. We weren’t part of the ownership decisions, and we don’t have influence over the investments made by companies above us. But that doesn’t mean we’re disconnected from what’s happening.

Over the past months, concerns have been raised about the nature of investments elsewhere in KKR’s portfolio. This has led to deep conversations within our team. We passionately stand against unethical investments and believe that we should live our values, so it doesn’t feel right to say or do nothing.   Our focus has always been to create space for connection, freedom, and community.

Leading human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as the International Court of Justice, have stated that the Israeli army is plausibly committing war crimes against the Palestinian people and even genocide in Gaza. These are not distant reports. They are real and happening now.

We stand firmly against any investment in companies complicit in this genocide.

While we do not often comment on broader geopolitical matters, there are moments when staying silent is simply not an option. We know this isn’t the only conflict in the world. There is suffering everywhere. But when we are linked to a situation, even indirectly and involuntary, we have a responsibility to say something.

We’ve pushed for answers and a concrete approach - importantly, as of this morning, we have received formal confirmation that the financial income of Superstruct Entertainment doesn’t flow out of the business to their owners, including KKR. Instead, all profits are used to support the development of festivals within our group.

Superstruct itself, together with us, operates independently and makes all creative and cultural decisions itself. All revenues are reinvested directly into the company.

This message is not a solution. It’s us saying we see what’s happening, we care, and we’re making steps to do what’s right, even if we don’t have all the answers yet.

Our identity and values are not defined by any ownership structure.

To everyone who has spoken up: thank you. Your voices push us forward.

With love & care,
Team Awakenings

As a small but tangible step, we’re donating 50% of all guest list contributions at this years’ events to Oxfam Novib, specifically supporting those affected in Gaza. As already mentioned at the guest list desk last weekend, Awakenings will double the amount raised. It’s a small step. But it matters to us. And we promise to keep pushing, questioning, and looking for ways to align our actions with our values.
